DELL ALIENWARE 15 (2015) EXTERNAL GRAPHIC AMPLIFIER DRIVER
If you are looking to use the laptop and Graphics Amplifier combination as a more portable alternative to a gaming desktop, it will do the trick, although the box weighs 7. If you have an older card, you're out of luck, and you will still be limited to a single PCI-Express x16 slot, but there's enough room for a full-length, dual-width card. The cable—actually two cables with braided sheathing—has a push-button, latch-and-release mechanism, to prevent unplugging when in use. And you definitely don't want to unplug the Amplifier while your laptop is powered on, since it will have the same effect blue screens, fatal exception errors, etc.
When connected and running, the card inside replaces the laptop's internal GPU, effectively giving you a laptop with desktop-grade graphics. Because it runs Dell Alienware 15 (2015) External Graphic Amplifier part of the system, you will need to connect the card before powering on the laptop and disconnect it after powering down, or use Alienware's AlienAdrenaline software the software for the Graphics Amplifier to set up a shortcut or activate the button on the cable connector that triggers the same action. In either case, the system Dell Alienware 15 (2015) External Graphic Amplifier still shut down to allow safe removal.
Unplug the Graphics Amplifier again, I stress, after shutting down the systemand the laptop goes back to just being a laptop, with whatever mobile graphics solution is inside taking over. You can also connect your laptop to an external monitor via the Graphics Amplifier, taking advantage of the desktop-grade graphics card to drive a larger, higher-resolution Dell Alienware 15 (2015) External Graphic Amplifier. With its built-in, four-port USB hub, the Graphics Amplifier can also function quite well as a desktop dock, letting you connect a keyboard and mouse and external storage to the system, plus a monitor for a full desktop setup.
Installation Installing a card in the Graphics Amplifier is relatively simple. A latch on the back panel of the unit lets you lift the housing open, giving you access to an internal board with a single PCI-Express x16 slot.
Two metal fillers cover the empty slot for the GPU ports, which you need to unscrew and remove. Once that's done, you can seat the card into the PCIe slot, and secure the card with the same screws. Close up the housing, plug in the Power cable, connect the Amplifier to your Alienware laptop, and fire up the system.

The Amplifier will start up automatically with the laptop. First, the Amplifier housing has a tendency to snag, refusing to open. A bit of gentle prying got the job done in our testing, but prying shouldn't be necessary.
Second, the included Quick Start guide, which offers basic card installation instructions, is woefully short on details. That would be fine, except for the fact that key details, such as which power cable connects where are absent. Performance When we reviewed the Alienware 15, we saw frame rates in our Dell Alienware 15 (2015) External Graphic Amplifier tests of 38 frames per second fps in Heaven, and 44fps in Valley both at full HD, with detail settings on high. The system's Heaven score shot up to 72fps, while Valley jumped to 68fps. Now, this shouldn't be a surprise, since this difference in performance nicely sums up the best argument for desktop gaming over laptops—with more space and more power, not to mention fewer thermal limitations, you get much, much better graphics performance.
I tried, two of them, without success. The second one was an Asus Thunderbolt EX3 expansion card.
The fan inside the PSU is rather loud during operation, even when idle. After taking the Razer Core apart in my last review, this Alienware Graphics Amplifier disassembly was a lot easier. I only needed a single Philips P1 screwdriver.

I have mixed feeling about this hinge design. Alienware Graphics Amplifier component view Unlike the half-meter long Thunderbolt 3 cables included in all TB3 enclosures, the AGA proprietary cable is almost three times as long at 4. The connectors are the same on both ends.
Once you plug the cable into the host computer and the AGAit will flash Red to White as an indication you need to restart the computer to make use of the Graphics Amplifier.
